In 1934, the American company Stein Hall invented a unique paste making method named by its company name. It was also known as the 'Two-barrel Type'. This method was simple, requiring less starch. The starch it produced has a good initial viscosity. However, there is a disadvantage: since only a small portion of the starch particles were gelatinised, its viscosity wasn't stable after circulating stir.

 

Great changes had taken place in the technique of paper making in recent years. The application of dry strength agent, wet strength agent and surface sizing agent on the recycled paper has enhanced the the paper's bursting strength, ring crushing index, water resistance and so on. But it also caused bonding issues.

 

The 'One-barrel Type' paste-making method has overcame the challenges and difficulties created by the 'Two-barrel Type'. All the starch particles are in a semi-pasted condition, with a stable viscosity. It has a good resistance against circulation and good permeability. The viscosity and gelatinizing temperature can be controlled easily.

 

However, there is still a disadvantage: it requires high level manufacturing technology and the initial viscosity is not ideal. The low-weight paper has an issue of showing the mark of corrugation.
